2013 Fusion plug-in tops Toyota Prius in overall, all-electric driving ranges.
Fusion Energi has an EPA-rated total range of up to 620 miles and the ability to drive up to 21 miles in electric-only mode, officials recently announced.

The plug-in hybrid sedan’s electric-only range tops its main competitors, the Honda Accord plug-in at 13 miles and Toyota Prius PHEV at 11 miles.

“Fusion Energi rounds out Ford’s list of available electrified vehicles perfectly by delivering another option to those who want to drive a hybrid without sacrificing comfort and convenience,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development, in a statement.

Nair said the ability for owners to go 620 miles without stopping for fuel or to charge the battery “almost epitomizes convenience.”

The range and all-electric miles of the vehicle add to the list of fuel-efficient achievments for the Fusion Energi, which has an EPA-rated fuel economy figures of 108 miles per gallon equivalent city, 92 MPGe highway and 100 MPGe combined.

MPGe is the EPA-devised measure for determining how many miles an EV can travel on a quantity of battery-generated electricity that has same energy content as a gallon of gasoline.

The EPA anticipates could help save customers an estimated $6,850 in fuel costs compared with an average new car over the course of five years.

Fusion Energi is the Ford brand’s fifth electrified vehicle to launch in the past year and is expected to improve the company’s record hybrid sales pace.

Ford sold more hybrids in the fourth quarter of 2012 than in any other three-month period during the company’s entire history with 19,554 units sold. Fusion Energi is the Ford brand’s fifth electrified vehicle to launch in the past year.

Other vehicles in Ford’s portfolio include the C-Max Energi, Focus Electric and Fusion and C-Max Hybrids.

The C-Max series, along with a host of other electrified vehicles from Ford, including the Ford Focus Electric and the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, are part of the automaker’s plan to have 10 to 25 percent of its global fleet electrified by 2020.

620 mile range is not big news - anybody can get that sort of range in a vehicle with a big gas tank. So what?

My F250 powerstroke can do over 600 miles with dual tanks - doesn't make it an efficient vehicle

Here are some specs of other plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to give a comparison on the Fusion Energi's ratings:

2013 Ford Fusion Energi
100 MPGe combined / 21 mile electric range / 620 miles range / $39,495 base price

2013 Chevrolet Volt
98 MPGe combined / 38 mile electric range / 382 miles range / $39,995 base price

2013 Toyota Prius Plug-in
95 MPGe combined / 11 mile electric range / 540 miles range / $32,760 base price

2014 Accord Plug-in
115 MPGe combined / 13 mile electric range / 574 miles range / $40,570 base price

Fusion Energi has the best range, second best MPGe and second best electric range. Still not sure why overall range is so important (which I'm not sure why it would be, everyone can find a gas station every few hundred miles).

But the Ford Fusion Energi has a 620 mile range on much less fuel than your F250. Much less fuel. This means you can go on long trips with less stops, it also means you can drive back and forth to work much longer before having to make fuel stops (or even almost never if you live within electric range and plug-in at home).
