The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid has received an E.P.A. certification of being able to achieve the equivalent of 108 miles per gallon in city driving, the automaker has announced.

The Fusion Energi was also certified at up to 92 “MPGe” – under the Environmental Protection Agency’s electricity vs. gas equivalency formula – in highway driving, for a combined 100 MPGe, Ford said.

The Fusion Energi’s triple-digit fuel economy certification comes at a welcome moment for the automaker, whose ratings on two of its hybrids introduced this year were called into question recently by Consumer Reports magazine. In tests conducted by the magazine’s editors, the C-Max and Fusion hybrids returned up to 20 percent worse fuel economy than the 47 m.p.g. Ford had claimed for both vehicles in its E.P.A. certification tests.

The E.P.A. announced it would review the discrepancy.

At least one lawsuit, a class action on behalf of a disgruntled C-Max owner in California, has been filed.

“In its advertising and marketing campaign for the vehicles, Ford claimed that the C-Max Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid achieved a class leading 47 miles per gallon,” a lawsuit filed by the California-based law firm McCuneWright reads in part. “These materials helped Ford achieve record sales for the first two months of C-Max Hybrid sales, outselling its rival, hybrid sales leader Toyota, but there was a problem. These ads were false.”

Ford also calculated that in five years of normal driving, compared with a gasoline-powered car, the Fusion Energi “could potentially help save customers an estimated $6,850 in fuel costs.”

The company said its hybrids sales were on a “record pace,” with more than 19,000 units expected to be sold during the year.

“In fact, C-MAX became the fastest-selling hybrid ever at launch after 8,030 units were sold in October and November, the first two months C-MAX was on the market,” the company said in a press release.
