Green cars are getting bigger and are equipped with premium technology and features previously seen only in higher-end vehicles.

A host of cars with small-displacement gas engines — along with hybrids and electric vehicles — were introduced last week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Green Car of the Year, the show's top award, went to the Ford Fusion.

The Fusion Energi is a mainstream, midsize car offered with hybrid and plug-in powertrain options and all the premium bells and whistles offered on top-of-the-line cars. The Fusion plug-in hybrid gets 47 mpg city and 47 mpg highway.

The days when fuel efficiency was the sole domain of spartan little cars are gone.

I just found out there were so many topics in Fusion Energi Forum that I never visited.
I agree with author on this subject. Luxury should be merged with environment friendly technology. That's the only way to survive.

I think what helps cars like the Toyota Prius and the Ford Fusion Energi blend luxury, green technology, and an affordable price tag is government subsidies. I heard numbers on the Prius that if it wasn't for subsidies, it would be an $80,000 car--which I think would slow sales a bit. I'm not sure what the numbers would be on the Fusion Energi, although I assume it must have some level of subsidization. I wonder how that whole scenario will play out long-term.
